Michael HanleyThe Rt. Rev. Michael Hanley, Bishop - Diocese of Oregon

Michael was born in 1954 and grew up in Oklahoma and in New York City. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1976 and a M.Div. from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, in 1981. He also holds a D.Min. in Congregational Development from Seabury-Western (2005). Michael has served parishes in Oklahoma, Missouri, and, for the past nineteen years, Minnesota. In the Diocese of Minnesota he served in a variety of elected and appointed leadership positions and is currently a trustee of Seabury-Western. He is known as a supportive mentor to people of all ages and stages of life, with a deep spiritual center. In a recent sabbatical he completed the 500-mile walking pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella, Spain, with his daughter. In his spare time he has been a storyteller, performing for schools, churches, and other civic groups. He is married to Marla Martin Hanley. Michael and Marla are the proud parents of two adult daughters.

Bill was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Comparative Religions from the University of Colorado, his Master of Divinity degree from Yale University, and his Doctor of Ministry degree from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. Bill joined Trinity in 2003. Before coming to Trinity, he served parishes in Kenilworth, Illinois and Plymouth, Michigan. Bill has also spent time serving campus ministries in Evanston, Illinois and Baltimore, Maryland. He is married and has two children.

Catherine was born in North Conway, New Hamphire and raised in a rectory in Suffern, New York. Her father was the rector at Christ Church in Suffern for 23 years. She earned her undergrad degree in American Colonial History at Harvard College. Catherine then went on to earn masters degrees in Music History and Literature and Flute from the University of Michigan School of Music. She earned her Master of Divinity degree from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As Canon Pastor for Parish Community Life at Trinity, Catherine oversees the work of the Pastoral Care, Cathedral Arts and Parish Life Committees; preaches, teaches and presides at liturgies; makes hospital visits; coordinates funerals, weddings, and the public and private prayer lists. Before coming to Trinity, Catherine served parishes in North Conway, New Hampshire, Belmont, Massachusetts, Houston, Texas, and Middlebury, Vermont. She is mother to daughter Cara, son Lowell, and grandmother to Alexandra, Isabel, Taylor, and granddog Chester. When Catherine is not busy serving at Trinity, she enjoys hiking, playing chamber music or flute solos, reading, text messaging, gardening, going to the Hollywood Farmers Market and dining with friends.

Nathan LeRudThe Rev. Nathan LeRud , Assistant to the Dean and Youth Leader

A fourth-generation Oregonian, Nathan was born right down the street from Trinity at Good Samaritan Hospital.  He holds degrees from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA and the General Theological Seminary in New York City, and served parishes in Washington, New York, and New Jersey before coming to Trinity in 2009.  As Assistant to the Dean, Nathan manages the Dean’s office and work flow, working closely with the Dean to ensure the smooth operation of Cathedral ministries and administration.  As a member of the clergy staff, he’s involved in preaching, presiding, pastoral care and teaching.  Nathan’s background is in ministry with children and youth, and he continues this vocation at Trinity as a Godly Play teacher and Youth Groups leader, working with Family Ministries to provide religious education and formation for Trinity’s younger members.  Passionate about classic Anglican liturgy and music, Nathan also works to help shape the new and innovative liturgies that the Cathedral continues to develop.  When not at Trinity, he’s an avid hiker and camper, NPR listener, and drinker of good beer and good coffee.  He collects books faster than he can read them and has been known to appear onstage in Portland theatre productions from time to time.

Cathedral Music

Tamara StillMichael Kleinschmidt, Canon for Cathedral Music

Michael Kleinschmidt is the newly appointed Canon for Cathedral Music at Trinity Cathedral, Portland. Formerly, he was Director of Music and Organist of Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston, where he directed a program involving ninety singers in choirs that sing three weekly services and join together to offer concerts and special services in the major holiday seasons.
Prior to that, Mr. Kleinschmidt was Organist and Master of Choristers of The Parish of All Saints, Ashmont, in Boston, where he rebuilt All Saints’ Choir of Men and Boys after a 1992 hiatus in their 113-year old tradition. For three years prior to moving to Boston, he was Assistant Organist of Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York City, and a pupil of Gerre Hancock. His other teachers include Haskell Thomson, Russell Saunders, and Peter Planyavsky.
A first prize winner in American Guild of Organists competitions, and in the Flint International Organ Playing Competition, Mr. Kleinschmidt has concertized in numerous North American communities, in Europe, and in Japan.
As a choral conductor, Mr. Kleinschmidt has served as guest conductor for summer choir courses of the Royal School of Church Music/America, and for diocesan youth choir festivals in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
As a member of the American Guild of Organists, he served as Coordinator for the AGO Regions I and II Convention, held in Boston in 2009.
In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Kleinschmidt takes an active interest in Japanese gardening and home design, hiking, and preparing and eating fine food.

 

Tamara StillDr. Tamara Still, Music Associate

Tamara received her undergraduate degree in organ performance and choral music education from William Jewell College, her Master’s degree in organ performance from UCLA, a post-graduate performance certificate in organ from Sweelinck Conservatory, and her Doctorate of Musical Arts in organ performance from the University of Washington. Tamara joined Trinity in June 2005 as the Cathedral’s music associate. Before coming to Trinity, she conducted the women’s choir and taught organ, harpsichord and musicianship at Seattle Pacific University and was co-director of music at Epiphany Parish in Seattle. In her free time, Tamara enjoys gardening and baking.

Family Ministry

Charissa SimmonsCharissa Simmons, Family Ministries Coordinator

Charissa was born in St. Paul, Nebraska and raised in Colorado. She graduated from Pacific Lutheran University, majoring in biology. While Charissa has been a member of Trinity since 1987, she didn’t join the staff until the summer of 2007. As Church School Coordinator, she is responsible for the church school, nursery, and Sunday morning activities for children and youth (infants through high school). Prior to coming to work at Trinity, Charissa was a stay-at-home mom for many years to her two daughters, Lydia and Emily. Charissa and her husband Erik, who she met in the Trinity choir, are also parents to two cats, Artemis and Diana. When Charissa is not busy coordinating family ministries, she enjoys gardening, landscaping, hiking and doing crossword puzzles.

Pam was born in St. Charles, Illinois and raised in Seattle, Washington. After graduating from the University of Washington with a double-major in English and history, she began a career in journalism. As communications coordinator, she edits/writes copy and designs the Sunday and seasonal leaflets, weekly e-mail update, Center e-mail blasts, funeral and wedding leaflets, and Cathedral and Center websites; maintains the Cathedral and Center for Spiritual Development websites; assists with the annual Stewardship campaign; and produces the Annual Report, Ministry Catalog, Cathedral Directory and other special communication projects. Pam is married and is blessed with one daughter. When she is not busy at work, Pam enjoys doing freelance writing/editing projects, volunteering at her church, swimming, walking, gardening, reading, good wine, and spending time with family and friends.

Sally PatonSally Paton, Finance Manager

Sally was born in Madison, Wisconsin and grew up in St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri and Ramsey, New Jersey. She attended the University of Arizona in Tucson and Ramapo College in New Jersey. Sally joined the Trinity staff in November 2004. As finance manager, she oversees the Cathedral’s operating budget, runs disbursements, does payroll, and produces financial statements for the Vestry. Before coming to Trinity, Sally worked 12 years for Timberline, a local accounting software company.  She is married to Craig and they are the parents of three grown children, a black lab named Cody and a cat named Hobbs. When not working, Sally enjoys reading, painting, traveling and counting her many blessings.

Shannon was born and raised in Portland, and attended Mt. Hood Community College for two years. Joining the Trinity staff in March 2001, Shannon is responsible for meeting with potential and new members at Trinity; managing contributions and pledges; providing pledge goal and progress information to the Annual Giving Committee; coordinating baptisms, funerals, and weddings; maintaining the electronic sermon file; administering parking permits; assisting with prayer lists and identifying pastoral concerns. Before coming to Trinity, Shannon worked 24 years at Portland Rent All. She and partner Dorman McGann enjoy taking care of their cat Artee, who has the run of their house and their lives. An avid NASCAR fan, Shannon enjoys watching the weekly races and attending a live race at least once a year. When not watching the races, Shannon enjoys cooking, baking and playing pool.

Katie Bronson, Bookstore Manager, was born in Wichita, Kansas and raised in Issaquah, Washington. She graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Radio and Television Communication. A member of Trinity since 1984 and Bookstore Manager since 2000, Katie’s duties include ordering books, taking books to conventions, working with a group of wonderful volunteers, and overseeing the day-to-day operation of the bookstore. Prior to coming to work at Trinity, she was a videotape editor at KGW-TV in Portland where she met her husband Dan. They have one daughter, Jillian. When Katie is not nose-deep in books, she enjoys volunteering with several figure skating organizations (daughter Jillian has skated for the last 12 years), gardening, reading, going to the movies, walking her West Highland Terrier, Jaime, and enjoying being with family and friends.
