Membership

We invite all seekers of God to join us in our worship, service, fellowship and education. The first step in belonging is simply being present in the life of the community as a seeker of God. If you have the intention of becoming a member, the first step is baptism, (if you have not yet been baptized in any Christian Church).

Baptism

Baptism is the basic action of initiation into the Christian Faith. In the Episcopal Church, we baptize people of all ages who come seeking the presence of God. We baptize with water sprinkled on the forehead, “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Baptism happens in the context of the gathered community on specific dates each year. We welcome those who have been baptized in another branch of the Christian faith.

If you have not yet been baptized, the first step in seeking baptism is to be present in the community for a while – attending worship and classes, participating in the Christian Fellowship. This ongoing participation is expressed in one of the questions we ask at baptism: Will you continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, the breaking of bread and the prayers? These are the fundamental actions that nourish us as Christians.

In addition, we offer a three week class for parents (and godparents) prior to baptism of their children which explores the history, symbols, and meaning of baptism and how we can, as families, live into the baptismal promises we make for our children.

Please do not hesitate to contact Shannon Tilton with your questions (503) 478-1223 – we know that sometimes the concepts of Baptism, Confirmation and membership can be confusing!

Pre-Baptismal Preparation Class for Parents and Godparents - Baptism & Prep Class Dates

All classes meet Sundays at 9:00am

2009 Baptisms
August 9, 2009 Baptism; Prep Class July 26 & August 2, 2009
November 1, 2009 Baptism; Prep Class October 18 & 25, 2009

Confirmation: for those who have been baptized in any Christian tradition

In the service of Confirmation, we “confirm” our baptismal faith. In infant baptism, the sponsors (or godparents) make the baptismal promises on behalf of the child. Confirmation, then, was the time when a Christian became “of age” and was asked to take on the baptismal promises for him or herself. At Trinity, those who desire to be confirmed members of the Episcopal Church, prepare by taking a Catechesis Class (the word Catechesis means “teaching”) from January until June. The Catechesis Class offers a good introduction to the history, worship, ethics, theology and music of the Christian Church and the Episcopal Church. Our service of Confirmation occurs when the Bishop is here on Trinity Sunday (usually late May or early June). If you desire to be a confirmed member of the Episcopal Church, join our next Catechesis Class.

Transfer: for those baptized and confirmed in another Episcopal parish

If you are already a baptized, confirmed Episcopalian but have come to us from another place or congregation, and would like to become a member of Trinity, we ask you to fill out the information found on the Welcome Form. Please contact Shannon Tilton with your questions, (503) 478-1223.

Reception: for those baptized and confirmed in another tradition

If you have been baptized and confirmed in the Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox branch of the Christian Faith, the Bishop will “receive you” into the Episcopal Church when he is here on Trinity Sunday. The preparation for becoming a member in this way is the Catechesis Class.

Weddings

Weddings are special at Trinity Cathedral. The service can be found in the Book of Common Prayer (1979). "The Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage" , is the liturgical form used for all our weddings. The canon law of the church requires that at least one of the couple be a baptized Christian. In addition, if a bride and groom wish to be married at Trinity one or both of them must be a member. The couple meets with Canon Pastor Nichols to begin the process of planning their wedding at Trinity. Couples must complete a Pre-Marital Workshop which takes place on a Friday night and Saturday in spring, summer, and fall.

Please contact Shannon Tilton with your questions (503) 478-1223.

Funerals & Memorial Services

Funerals and memorial services are arranged with one of the Trinity Clergy, most often Canon Pastor Nichols in consultation with Dean Lupfer.

Please do not hesitate to contact Shannon Tilton with your questions (503) 478-1223.
