"BALANCING ACT" SERENA BARTON EXHIBIT
Aug 29-Oct 31: It’s all a balancing act, isn’t it? Work and family, leisure and endeavor, creativity and practicality, belief and questioning. This body of work comes out of my struggles to balance my lives as an artist, a counselor, and a college teacher and out of my need to balance my creation of representational and abstract work. Painting with melted wax and pigment onto wood I find a balance between my intentions and my interactions with the medium. It’s like a conversation between me and the materials with the need to reach a harmonious accord. Working with mixed media also has an element of balancing—too much, too little, or just right? In this show I hope to evoke a sense of precarious and joyful balance.

Women’s Right and the Holy Qur’an: A Supportive Relationship with Greg Hetrick

Islam is viewed by many as a radical and intolerant belief system. The writings of the Holy Qur'an show a different world, especially for the treatment of women. Greg Hetrick will give a brief examination of how UN women's rights conventions are supported by the sacred text of Islam. Included in this presentation will be case studies of Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

TRANSFORMING AWARENESS: A DIALOGUE WITH MICHAEL BERNARD BECKWITH & ROBERT THURMAN
Friday, September 10, 7 p.m., Trinity Cathedral
Robert Thurman and Michael Bernard Beckwith will share the stage at Trinity for an evening of lively and spontaneous conversation, spanning topics from the global to the personal. Both of these spiritual leaders are committed to illuminating how changes can happen — globally, locally, and personally — if we shift our focus from fear to love. It’s sure to be an evening of entertainment while bringing you to deeper levels of awareness and joy. Tickets for the event are $25 for general admission and $100 for a VIP package, which includes a pre-event reception at 5:30 pm with Beckwith and Thurman, preferred seating at the event, and a gift bag that includes a selection of the authors’ products. To order your tickets, go to: www.BeckwithThurmanEvent.com. This event is sponsored by Beyond Words and Trinity’s Center for Spiritual Development.

HARVEST: A CELEBRATION OF ABUNDANCE SET TO THE MUSIC OF NEIL YOUNG
Join Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18 for a Eucharistic celebration of harvest and abundance set to the music of the man recently named the second most influential living songwriter, Neil Young. The offering will go to Trinity's food ministries, which served nearly 20,000 meals in 2009 and is on track to exceed that this year. If "rust never sleeps," then neither should our fight against hunger. A full set of Neil songs, from  "Helpless"  to "The Way," will echo through the cathedral as Trinity’s Band and Children’s Choirs lead us in worship set to the music of a legendary singer, songwriter, and prophet.
