THE CENTER FOR SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

The Center Holds a Tribute to John O’Donohue
Saturday, February 9, 2008:
7:30 – 9:00pm, Kempton Hall
Led by Padraigin Clancy and Celtic Harpist Denis Doyle
Refreshments provided, donations appreciated.
It is with great sadness that we learned of John O’Donohue’s death on January 3, 2008. John leaves behind an enormous circle of bereft readers and listeners, a great crowd of mourning friends, and most especially, a shocked and grieving family. We were privileged to have John as a presenter at The Center last October. He drew a large crowd of devoted fans from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado and Canada.
On Saturday evening, we’ll hold a tribute to John O’Donohue celebrating the life and death of this gifted speaker, storyteller, dynamic teacher and author of Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom. It is by rare fortune that we have Padraigin Clancy with us this weekend; Padraigin and John were close personal friends and colleagues. She will draw from the well of Celtic wisdom including the works of John O’Donohue and, with Celtic harpist Denis Doyle, will help us celebrate John.
In the words of David Whyte: John was a love-letter to humanity from some address in the firmament we have yet to find and locate, though we may wander many a year looking or listening for it.

Come learn favorite dances for this time in the liturgical year including the Dance of the Angels and the Pelota which were danced around the labyrinth in the Middle Ages in celebration of the season.

  February 8 & 9, 2008 – A Celtic Weekend with Padraigin Clancy & Denis Doyle
Lecture: February 8, 7:30pm. Trinity Cathedral, $15 general, $10 Trinity members;
Workshop: February 9, 9:00am – 3:00pm, Kempton Hall, $50 general, $35 Trinity members
Saturday night - Tribute to John O’Donohue. 7:30-9pm. Donations accepted.
Attend the whole weekend for $65 general, $58.50 Trinity Members
Center pilgrims to Ireland in 2007 fell in love with scholar, storyteller and musician Padraigin Clancy’s charm, wit and impressive knowledge of Celtic Christianity and history. During this weekend she will be joined by Celtic harpist Denis Doyle to explore images of dying and rising, releasing and letting go in hopes of something new being born. Friday's lecture will explore central themes of Celtic spirituality and ways we can return to the well of Celtic wisdom during the “desert” season of Lent for inspiration, sustenance and courage.

On Saturday, we will celebrate the life and wisdom of St. Brigit and look at the importance of the feminine in the Celtic tradition. With Brigit, Padraigin and Denis as our guides, the day will explore the immanence of God, even when the journey is challenging and difficult, and provide the possibility of healing, holiness and wholesomeness.

In recognition of this long term support, an anonymous $12,000 donation has been made in Trinity’s name to fund a room in the new Clark Center Annex, which now provides permanent housing for 22 of Transition Project’s formerly homeless clients. One of those rooms will have a plaque with Trinity Cathedral’s name on the door.

CATHEDRAL ARTS

“Whispers of Inspiration.” Ames Dee has fun drawing during worship. Every Sunday she comes to church with her personal journal and a variety of drawing pens. She responds with words and images to the lessons, the preaching, the music, and the liturgy. These Sunday pages are interspersed with daily journal entries, poems, and quotations from her reading, forming an integral part of her spiritual journey. They are not made as art for exhibition, but as a way to remember whispers from the Holy Spirit. Selections from Ames's journal drawings will be on display in the in the display cabinet near the church offices. This is an opportunity to see the colorful private musings of a spiritual seeker.

"Faith and Determination," based on the poems of Mary Oliver, Wednesday, February 13, 7-8:30pm. “Her works are about love and death, the natural laws of this world, the quest for grace.” A casual roundtable discussion hosted by Sharon Whitney, Greg Harris and Rev. Maureen Tighe. Please signup at Information Center outside Kempton Hall, call 503-478-1203 or email: arts@trinity-episcopal.org.

A NOTE FROM THE NEWCOMER COMMITTEE

LET’S WELCOME NEWCOMERS, VISITORS AND GUESTS A friendly and welcoming place to worship and share spiritual fellowship is what Trinity is all about. Our new people are very important and it becomes all of our responsibility to make them feel comfortable and welcome. It’s easy and fun. The next time you are at service, look at the people around you and if you don’t recognize someone, introduce yourself and maybe invite them to fellowship. How important would that be to a person who is new and wanting to share the fellowship we enjoy after our events and services. Be generous with your friendly smiles and handshakes and let’s welcome everyone, every week to this wonderful Cathedral of ours.

NEXT WEEK - NEWCOMERS, VISITORS AND GUESTS - Trinity Episcopal Cathedral’s Welcome Committee invites you to our monthly “Meet & Greet” Fellowship. Please join us immediately after the 10am service on January 20, in the Morrison Room of the Parish Hall. This is a very good opportunity to meet Vestry members, and other newcomers. So, bring the family and let’s enjoy some coffee, punch and fellowship!

Readings
The Collect

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The Hebrew Scripture
Isaiah 42:1-9

Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, o bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

The Psalm at the 8am Service: Psalm 29
Afferte Domino
1
Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, *
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; *
worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
3
The voice of the LORD is upon the waters;
the God of glory thunders; *
the LORD is upon the mighty waters.
4
The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; *
the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor.
5
The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; *
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
6
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, *
and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.
7
The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire;
the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; *
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
8
The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe *
and strips the forests bare.
9
And in the temple of the LORD *
all are crying, "Glory!"
10
The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; *
the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore.
11
The LORD shall give strength to his people; *
the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace.

The Psalm at the 10am Service: Psalm 89:21-22, 24-29
Misericordias Domini
21
My hand will hold him fast *
and my arm will make him strong.
22
No enemy shall deceive him, *
nor any wicked man bring him down.
24
My faithfulness and love shall be with him, *
and he shall be victorious through my Name.
25
I shall make his dominion extend *
from the Great Sea to the River.
26
He will say to me, 'You are my Father, *
my God, and the rock of my salvation.'
27
I will make him my firstborn *
and higher than the kings of the earth.
28
I will keep my love for him for ever, *
and my covenant will stand firm for him.
29
I will establish his line for ever *
and his throne as the days of heaven."

The Second Lesson
Acts 10:34-43

Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

The Gospel
Matthew 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
