Matthew Thompson

Trinity is dear to me, and I am at home here. The liturgy and choral music are sacred and beautiful; they sustain me spiritually. My children have spent their formative years here. Family traditions have grown around the seasons and events at Trinity. I am deeply invested and thankful.

My wife, Sarah, and I were confirmed and married in 1999 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lansing, Michigan. Subsequently, we became members of All Saints’ in Pontiac, Michigan and St. Stephen’s in Troy, Michigan. We have been at Trinity since we moved to Portland in 2008. We are parents of Kathryn (17), Victoria (15), and Daniel (9). Kathryn completed Jill’s youth confirmation course and was confirmed in the Spring of 2018. She is pursuing an IB diploma at Sunset High School where she plays varsity tennis. She is also a recent addition to Trinity’s childcare staff. In Trinity Choir circles, Sarah and I are better known as Victoria’s parents because she has been one of Bruce’s choristers since 2016. She has advanced through the ranks of the Royal School of Church Music program, toured with the adult choir to amazing locations, and has formed numerous friendships across distances and generations. Victoria is now a freshman at Sunset High School. Daniel is our native Oregonian, although he was made an honorary Michigander by our friend and Episcopal priest, Robert Hart, at Daniel’s baptism in Gull Lake, Michigan. Daniel is in the fourth grade.

Professionally, I am in-house legal counsel at Finastra, a global FinTech services company, with 11+ years of supporting, managing, and marketing a portfolio of digital retail banking solutions. I am Vice-Chair of the Commercial and Real Estate Lending Subcommittee of the American Bar Association’s Banking Law Committee. I transitioned to my current position from working in private practice as a commercial litigation and retail bankruptcy attorney in a full-service business law firm. Sarah has specialized in neonatal intensive care nursing for her entire career and helped open the NICU at Providence Portland.

I am a volunteer coach for Rugby Oregon and Oak Hills Soccer Club. I hold coaching and officiating certifications through USA Rugby. I wake up way too early in the morning to play tennis three days per week.
