“The psalms are your path; never leave it.”  —St. Romauld (951-1027)

Why chant the psalms? In recent years, contemplative Christian chanting has trended away from the “wordy” and sometimes violent psalms for forms like Taize that more immediately evoke a contemplative state. But in her book, Chanting the Psalms, Cynthia Bourgeault describes how psalms have been used since the time of St. Benedict as a means to bring unitive consciousness into daily life and how they can still be used that way today. In this class, we’ll use Bourgeault's book to learn and chant the psalms together, explore and create our own Daily Office, and look at ways to integrate psalmody into a daily contemplative practice. Books will be available first day of class.  In-person only. Taught by Pat Zimmer.

About the instructor: Pat Zimmer sang with Trinity Choir for more than 30 years. She has been teaching contemplative chant and leading Centering Prayer since 2020.
