Gnostic Christianity was a mystical movement flourishing in the early centuries of the Christian era. Gnostic philosophy experienced a renaissance following the 1945 discovery of fourth-century texts buried in a clay jar at Nag Hammadi, Egypt—including the Gospel of Thomas and the Apocryphon of John. This movement represents a suppressed part of Christian history whose writings are excluded from the Bible and from our tradition, offering a unique understanding of Christianity that may inform our own faith in new ways.
In this class, we examine the mythology and mysticism of the Gnostics, using excerpts from their writings to reflect on how gnosis can deepen our 21st-century faith.
