Seeing Jesus in Art & Culture

(In-person only; led by Monte Wolverton) 

Can we know what Jesus really looked like?

Discover how the traditional image of Jesus took shape over centuries as we explore how Christian teachings about imagery and the second commandment evolved – sometimes with violent repercussions. We’ll view hundreds of images of Jesus from the earliest depictions to movies and pop culture, and consider how and why we arrived at our traditional image of Jesus. 

The class will be interactive, and prior knowledge of art history and church history are not required. The last session will be a hands-on project, with participants working in in groups to assemble a visual, prosaic, or poetic image of Jesus.
