About the Event
Writing Right, Writing White
Hybrid; led by Liz Harlan-Ferlo.
Our 2026 Lent Read is The Right Kind of White by community organizer Garrett Bucks. Using that as our example text, we’ll explore the craft of writing memoir, especially about our own experiences encountering race.
This class is idea for those who would like to learn about how to write stories of their lives and also to more deeply consider the role of whiteness in their experiences. We will build a supportive, formational community in which to explore these skills.
Before each class, participants will respond to writing prompts based on Bucks’ book. In class, we will read and discuss short essays about memoir writing, and share our own writing in small groups (optional). By the end of the class, participants will have at least one structured piece of writing (or more) that they can revise beyond the classroom.
