About the Organist: Jacob Reed was born in Oxford, England before growing up in North Carolina. He is currently serving as Renate M. Thilenius Memorial Scholar in Piano and Organ at the University of Chicago’s Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, accompanying choirs and singers across campus, and teaching students in organ, piano, and harpsichord. He also plays basso continuo on organ and harpsichord with ensembles across the Chicagoland area.   In late 2022 he performed the complete organ works of César Franck in two recitals to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth year. In the 2023-24 academic year, he is giving a weekly series presenting the complete organ works of J.S. Bach, following the liturgical calendar.

Jacob received a simultaneous BA/MA in music history and theory (double-major in mathematics) from Yale, where he studied organ with Thomas Murray and harpsichord with Arthur Haas. He then graduated with an MM in organ performance from Yale’s School of Music/Institute of Sacred Music, where he studied with Martin Jean and served as Organ Scholar at Grace Church in New York City. He was the recipient of the ISM's 2018 Robert Baker Scholarship, and the YSM's 2019 Julia R. Sherman Memorial Prize for excellence in organ playing.

In addition to organ recitals across the U.S., Europe and Canada, Jacob has performed widely on other keyboards, serving as artist-in-residence as organist and pianist at the Uncommon Music Festival in Sitka, Alaska. A piano accompanist for the Yale Opera Program, he also played in the Yale Temperament Viol Consort and Yale Collegium Musicum, and was first harpsichordist for the Yale Baroque Opera Project for four years.  Jacob is currently a PhD student in Music History and Theory at the University of Chicago, where he is a Neubauer Family Distinguished Doctoral Fellow and was the recipient of the 2023 Cathy Heifetz Memorial Award.
