About the Event
Karen Miller has been making art with the traditional Japanese technique katazome (stencil dyeing) for 25 years. Shortly after her election, Diana Akiyama commissioned Karen to create bishop vestments to reflect both her Japanese heritage and her passion for the natural world, especially water – delicate, understated, and fluid. As a skilled seamstress herself, the bishop was deeply involved in every step of the project, choosing traditional stencil patterns for the chasuble to reflect her history, even her personal family crests.  Come learn how they collaborated to create Bishop Akiyama’s unique & beautiful vestments.
