About the Event

(In person; facilitated by Rita Weick & Susan Turpin)   What can we learn from praying and reflecting on the spiritual journey with people in prison? Why is centering prayer so well suited to prisoner, and what does that say about our practice as free people? Join us as we consider how Contemplative Outreach is addressing the great need for bringing contemplative practice into prisons.  Register in advance: https://onrealm.org/TrinityEpiscopalpdx/PublicRegistrations/Event?linkString=MjZiNTc0ZGMtMDk5Ni00NjBmLWI2OWMtYWU1ODAxNDk0M2Yx

Prior to the retreat, we recommend watching Holding Still, a documentary featuring interviews with men in the Folsom Centering Prayer group. The documentary can be found at https://www.catholicprisonministries.org/holding-still-2. Mini-Retreats are always free to attend, but donations are gratefully accepted.

About the presenters:

For three years before the pandemic, Rita Weick co-facilitated a Centering Prayer group in a minimum security prison in Madras, Oregon. The men brought a wealth of experience, insight and, in some cases, a long meditation practice to the group.  Susan Turpin began volunteering at Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles in 1998, then at different prisons and jails in her travels over the next decade.  She learned that inside or outside prison walls, the journey is intimacy with God.

Contemplative Mini-Retreats take place every 3rd Saturday, 9:00 am-noon. Join us for meditation, contemplative prayer as we sit together in community, with time for reflection, learning, and support, with guest teachers to help us explore the contemplative path. Mini-Retreats are free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
